Account recovery readiness: what to set up on day one when you register at an exchange

Guides · 2026-10-01

Registration is the one moment when people are paying attention to their new exchange account, and it is the cheapest moment to prepare for trouble. A few extra minutes on day one can mean the difference between a short inconvenience and weeks of lost access when a phone is stolen or an email provider closes an old mailbox. This guide lists what to set up at sign-up on Binance, OKX, Bybit or Bitget, from the choice of email to the storage of backup keys, so that recovery is something you have already planned for rather than something you improvise.

Choose a stable, protected email

Register with an address you expect to keep for years, not a throwaway or a work account that may be closed. Protect it with a unique password and its own second step. Since password resets pass through that inbox, it is effectively the master key of the account. Avoid using it for newsletters and giveaways, which attract targeted phishing.

Pick a second step you can restore

An authenticator app or a passkey is stronger than text messages, but only if you can restore it. Write the authenticator's setup key on paper at the moment you scan the code, and store the paper privately. If passkeys are offered, add a second trusted device straight away. Test the arrangement by signing out and in again before you deposit anything.

Create a short paper record

On one sheet, note the exchange name, the registered email, the linked phone number and which second step is used. Leave out passwords and codes. When something goes wrong months later, this sheet saves you from guessing which address or number you used. Keep it with other important documents, away from anything that would reveal it to visitors.

Know the official route in advance

Read the recovery section of the platform's help centre once, while nothing is wrong, and bookmark it. That way you will recognise the genuine process in a stressful moment, and you will be less likely to follow a stranger who offers help. Remember that genuine support never contacts you first on social media and never asks for passwords or full codes.

Risk boundary: Safe Crypto Signup

Digital assets are volatile and derivatives can amplify losses. This website has no login, wallet connection, deposit form or customer-support chat. A referral link only records attribution; it does not guarantee access, pricing, rewards, approval or investment results. Availability can differ by residence, legal entity and product, so no regional access is assumed from language or branding alone.
