Positive or negative funding? What the sign means before you hold a perpetual

Guides · 2026-10-14

Signing up safely is not only about passwords. Many people open a futures screen within days of creating an account, see a small percentage labelled funding, and ignore it. Then a week later their balance is lower than the price chart suggests it should be. Funding is not hidden, but it is easy to misread. This short explainer covers what the sign of the rate tells you, where Binance, OKX, Bybit and Bitget show it, and the questions to ask before keeping a leveraged position open across several settlements.

Why funding exists at all

A perpetual contract has no expiry date, so nothing naturally pulls its price back to the spot market. Funding is the mechanism that does it. When the contract trades above spot, holders of long positions pay holders of shorts, encouraging the price back down. When it trades below, the payment flows the other way. The exchange typically passes the payment between traders rather than keeping it, though you should confirm that in its help centre.

Reading the sign correctly

On the futures screen, find the funding rate beside the contract name or above the chart. A positive number means longs pay and shorts receive. A negative number means shorts pay and longs receive. The countdown next to it shows when the next settlement happens. You are only affected if you hold a position at that moment. Hover or tap for the rate history; a rate that keeps flipping indicates a nervous market.

Estimating the effect on your balance

Funding applies to the full position value, not to the margin you posted. Multiply the position value by the rate for an approximate single payment. Because leverage makes the position large relative to your margin, repeated payments can take a meaningful bite out of your collateral and bring the liquidation price closer. Recalculate whenever the rate changes significantly.

Simple habits that prevent surprises

Check the rate and countdown before opening, and again before deciding to hold overnight. Filter your transaction history by funding to see actual charges. If you only want price exposure for weeks or months, compare the accumulated funding with simply buying on the spot market, where no funding applies. When in doubt, a smaller position or no position is the safer choice.
