Your first limit order: what maker and taker mean for a new account

Guides · 2026-10-01

Within minutes of registering, you will see the words maker and taker next to fee information. They sound technical, but they describe something simple: whether your order waited for a counterpart or matched at once. Because platforms often charge the two roles differently, understanding them early helps you avoid surprises on your first trades. This article explains both roles in everyday terms, shows how a limit order can accidentally become a taker, and explains where to confirm the fees that apply to your account. It gives no rates, since they change and differ by account.

Waiting versus matching

Think of the order book as a queue of offers. If you add an offer that nobody has accepted yet, you are a maker: your order waits and supplies liquidity. If you accept an existing offer immediately, you are a taker: you consume liquidity. The same trade can therefore be done in two ways, with different fee treatment, depending on how you place it.

The accidental taker

A limit order does not guarantee maker status. If you set a buy price at or above the best sell price, it matches immediately and is treated as a taker. To wait on the book, your price has to sit on your own side of the spread. Some platforms offer a post-only option, which cancels an order that would match at once; check the help centre for the name and availability.

Where to confirm the fees

Fee rules depend on product and account level, and they are updated. Read the official fee page of your platform, and note the date. After your first trades, open the order history and look at the fee and the role for each fill. Compare them with what you expected. That small exercise turns an abstract schedule into something you understand from your own experience.

Choose by purpose, not only by fee

If you need to buy right now, accepting the taker role is fine. If you can wait, a patient limit order may be cheaper. But a maker order that never fills achieves nothing. Keep a short note of each early trade with its role and fee, and review it after a few weeks. Your own results are the best guide for later choices.
