Your first order after signup: why a small limit order teaches more than a market buy

Guides · 2026-10-17

The quickest way to buy crypto after signing up is a market order: choose the pair, enter an amount, press Buy. It works, but it hides almost everything you will need to understand later. You do not see the spread you crossed, you may not notice whether the fee was charged as maker or taker, and you skip the order history. A small limit order, placed deliberately and watched until it fills or is cancelled, shows each of those parts in action. Think of it as a practice lap with real but small money.

Pick a liquid pair and a tiny amount

Choose a major pair such as BTC or ETH against USDT, where the order book is deep and prices move smoothly. Decide on an amount you would not mind holding even if the price drops, and check that it meets the pair's minimum order size shown on the trading screen. Switch the order type to Limit. Look at the order book: the best bid and best ask are the two prices at the centre, and the gap between them is the spread.

Place the order below the current price

Enter a buy price slightly below the best bid, so your order joins the queue rather than matching immediately. Submit it and open the open orders tab. Your order is now visible to the market and waiting. Watch what happens as the price moves. If it fills, you have experienced a maker fill. If the price moves away, cancel it and notice that nothing was charged. Either outcome teaches you how a resting order behaves.

Read the fill and the fee

Once filled, open trade history or order history and find the fee line. Divide the fee by the filled value and compare it with the maker rate shown on the exchange fee page for your account level. Then try the opposite: place a small limit sell at or through the best bid so it matches immediately, and compare the fee on that fill with the taker rate. Seeing both roles on your own account makes the fee table far easier to understand.

What to do before larger orders

Write down three things from the exercise: the spread you observed, the maker and taker rates you were charged, and where order history lives in the app. When you move to larger sizes, keep using limit orders on pairs with thinner books, and check the depth near your price before placing a market order. If anything in the fills looked different from the fee page, the exchange help centre explains how fees are calculated and in which coin they are charged.
