Choosing between limit patience and market urgency
Every time you place an order, you choose between two things that cannot both be guaranteed: filling right now, or filling at a price you control. Market orders give you speed but accept whatever prices are in the order book. Limit orders give you price control but may not fill at all. New users often default to market orders because they are simple, even when there is no rush. Over many trades, that habit can cost more than expected, particularly in thin markets. This guide helps new users of Binance, OKX, Bybit or Bitget decide when patience is worth it and when urgency is justified. It quotes no fees and makes no price predictions.
Ask whether time matters
Before each order, ask what happens if it does not fill for an hour, or at all. If the answer is nothing serious, you can afford a limit order. If you must close a position immediately to limit risk, a market order may be appropriate. Most everyday purchases of a long-term holding have no real time pressure, which makes patience the more sensible default.
What urgency costs
A market order consumes liquidity from the order book. If the book is thin or your order is large, it can fill at several price levels, producing an average price worse than the one you saw. Market orders are also usually charged as taker fills. Look at the order book depth before using one, and consider splitting a large order into smaller pieces.
What patience costs
A limit order sets the worst price you accept. If the market moves away, it may never fill and you may miss the trade. Set a realistic price based on the current book, decide how long you are willing to wait and check on the order. A limit priced through the current market fills immediately, so it behaves much like a market order with a price cap.
Build a simple rule
Many users settle on a personal rule: limit orders by default, market orders only when closing risk quickly or when the size is tiny relative to the book. Write your rule down and review it after a month by comparing fills with the prices you expected. A rule based on your own history is more useful than general advice.
