Your first deposit after signing up: the safe order of steps
Just opened an account on Binance, OKX, Bybit or Bitget? The order in which you secure the account, verify identity and make the first deposit matters. A step-by-step sequence for newcomers.
Multiple exchanges | the reader's region | the reader's funding currency | fees, access and account safety
The excitement of a new account pushes many people to deposit straight away. Then they discover that the deposit route they wanted needs verification, that the funds landed in a different wallet than expected or, worst case, that the account was not secured before money arrived. A first deposit goes most smoothly when it comes after a few short setup steps. Following them in order takes perhaps half an hour and prevents most early problems.
Secure the account before any money arrives
Before depositing, open the security settings. Add an authenticator app or a passkey, set an anti-phishing code and check that your email address is one you control and will keep. Turn on login and withdrawal notifications. If the exchange offers withdrawal whitelisting, enable it now, while the account is empty, so later edits are not rushed. These steps protect the first deposit from the very first minute.
Complete identity verification
Many deposit methods, especially for local currency, require identity verification. Complete it using documents that match your profile details, in good lighting, before you need it. If verification is pending, wait for it to finish rather than trying workarounds. Accounts verified with someone else's documents, or with incorrect details, are often restricted later, usually when you try to withdraw.
Choose the route and read the screen
Decide how you will fund the account: local currency through a payment method shown on your account, P2P, or by sending crypto from elsewhere. Open that route and read the instructions and costs on screen. For crypto deposits, choose the network first, then copy the address and any memo. For local currency, use only references and details shown in the deposit screen for that specific transfer.
Start small and confirm where it lands
Send a small amount first. When it arrives, check which wallet it appears in, since many exchanges separate funding and trading wallets. Practise an internal transfer if needed. Then deposit the rest. Keep receipts or transaction IDs until the balance shows correctly. Finally, try a small withdrawal back out, so you know the exit works before you build a larger balance.
